Cem Özdemir moves to Dienstvilla from downtown Stuttgart

Cem Özdemir, Prime Minister of Baden-Württemberg

Baden-Württemberg’s Prime Minister Cem Özdemir leaves his apartment in the city centre of Stuttgart and moves to the service villa at Schloss Solitude. According to the Green politician, this is mainly for security reasons. His rental apartment, in which he now lives with his wife and his son, would have to be upgraded security, said Özdemir according to the news agency dpa. Windows, doors – the effort is great, so the head of government. At some point he would take off again. It makes more sense to invest the money in a building that belongs to the country.

Since his return from Berlin, Özdemir has lived in an apartment in the city centre of Stuttgart. The guarding of the head of government should be much easier for the officials of the state criminal police office in the Prime Minister villa than in the densely populated city center. How many rooms he will use there privately and how much rent he pays in the villa, Özdemir could not say at first. This is billed by square meter.

The service villa is located on the grounds of the castle Solitude eight kilometers west of the center of Stuttgart. The castle, built by the Duke of Württemberg, Karl Eugen, between 1763 and 1767, was attached to an economic building. In its place, a two-storey villa was built in 1968/69 during the reign of Prime Minister Hans Filbinger (CDU), which was completely tailored to the living needs of his family with five children.

From 1985, the then Prime Minister Lothar Späth (CDU) used the villa, as the Finance Ministry announced. Between 1997 and 2004, the building was rented privately several times, from 2006 lived there the then Prime Minister Günther Oettinger (CDU). From 2013 to 2026, the property was leased to the company Trumpf for meetings and further training. Özdemir’s predecessor in office, former Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Green Party), did not use the service villa and preferred to stay with his wife Gerlinde in his home country Laiz near Sigmaringen. Gerlinde Kretschmann once said that her 3000 euros cold rent for the villa was too expensive.

As Prime Minister, Winfried Kretschmann was for years one of the most important politicians of the Greens. Here, the 78-year-old talks about the crisis of democracy, about the craft of governance – and thinks about dying.
