VfB Stuttgart, struggling in the Bundesliga, has pushed Atlético Madrid to the edge of defeat in the Champions League. Against a home backdrop, the Swabians dominated the Spaniards over long distances of the game, but did not get beyond a 1:1 (1:0). Nevertheless, the start of the European Cup season was successful for the Stuttgart team with seven points from three games.
Especially in the first half the team of Sebastian Hoeneß played out numerous opportunities and was overall more gripping in the duels. In the 36th minute, the people of Stuttgart then rewarded themselves with the leadership goal by Jamie Leweling after a successful pressing action by Angelo Stiller. With this score and the meanwhile 0-0 in the game between FC Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, VfB jumped to the top of the Champions League table. The followers sang “Leader, Lead Rider, hey, hey.”
In the second round, Atletico struck back in the form of Julián Álvarez, who hit the upper right corner (47th). After that, the Spaniards weakened themselves: Morten Hjulmand came too late against Stiller with a handle and rightly saw the Red Card (64th). Overwhelmingly, the Stuttgarters pushed for victory, but could not defeat Jan Oblak again. VfB striker Deniz Undav spoke in an interview on Prime Video of “lost two points”.
At Anfield Road, Liverpool FC also turned a 0-2 deficit into a 4-3 home win over Villareal thanks to Florian Wirtz. Also because defence chief Virgil Van Dijk miscalculated himself in a header return, the Reds were early behind by goals of Georges Mikautadze (4th) and Sergi Cardona (29th). Before the break Alexis Mac Alilister (36th) and Ronald Araújo (45th +2).
After a fine dribbling of 18-year-old Rio Ngumoha Mac Allister (65th) met again for the lead before Wirtz, who had been replaced at halftime, increased to 4-2. Tanitoluwa Oluwaseyi (87.) succeeded only the following hit for the guests.
Meanwhile, Manchester City on the pitch continues not to be irritated by the financial scandal around the club. The team of Enzo Maresca won sovereignly against AEK Athens 5:1 (2:0). The outstanding man on the pitch was England’s international Phil Foden, who scored a three-pack (34./65./76.). The other city goals were made by Elliot Anderson (12th) and Rayan Cherki (57th). Stavros Pilios (52.) achieved the honorary goal for Athens.
