ChatGPT can't spy on sites open in Chrome

ChatGPT is getting smarter. The OpenAI's artificial intelligence assistant can see and read the content of the website that the user is opening on Google Chrome, even analyze several tabs at once.

This new ability comes through the renewal of ChatGPT integration with Chrome. Still, it's not like AI could sneak a peek at browsing activity. The user must connect the browser and give permission first.

This update became part of the OpenAI strategy after stopping the experimental browser ChatGPT Atlas in August 2026. The company is now developing AI's ability to work directly with a user-used browser.

One of the skills offered was to read and compare information from several open Chrome tabs.

Users can connect Chrome to ChatGPT, then ask AI to analyze information from allowed web pages.

Along with the extension update, OpenAI also updated ChatGPT's cyclical interface in Chrome. Users are now able to access the full conversation history of Chat and Work modes without having to leave the current web page.
