Kim Jong Un’s Luxury Yacht Spotted in Satellite Images, Complete with a Swimming Pool

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is reported to own an 80-metre luxury yacht that has been moored since last July.

The yacht was spotted in satellite imagery off the coast of Wonsan, North Korea.

Wonsan is where Kim spent part of his childhood with his mother. The city has been associated with the family since the reign of his father, Kim Jong Il.

Returning to the satellite imagery, the images reveal that the yacht features a 50-metre swimming pool running the length of the deck, with several water slides at one end.

The exact price of this luxury yacht is unknown, but it is likely to range from tens of millions to over $100 million, or Rp1.80 trillion.

Kim’s much smaller yacht, the ‘Princess’, which is just 29 metres long, is estimated to be worth around $7 million, or approximately Rp126 billion.

A BBC report on Saturday (18 October) also stated that the yacht was moved in early July to waters off the coast known as the Kalma Peninsula. This location is close to Wonsan, a seaside resort frequently used by Kim and his family.

Satellite imagery analysed by the BBC also shows a number of other large vessels near Kim’s resort.

These vessels are believed to be used by Kim and his family. Former North Korean officials, defectors and experts say it would be difficult for anyone not connected to the regime’s leadership to own or use vessels of this size freely.

“In winter, they will store them at the shipyard,” said Ri Jong Ho, a North Korean defector who was formerly an official at the North Korean Workers’ Party Office.

He added, “When summer arrives, they will take them out and move them to Kim Jong Un’s villa or towards Kalma, and use them for swimming and recreation.”

The wealth of those at the top of North Korea’s dictatorship is as difficult to ascertain as the country’s economy itself.

The UN and other bodies rely on estimates to classify North Korea as one of the world’s poorest countries, with a massive military budget.
