Ukraine war: Trump’s twisted view of the world

The American president takes the side of the aggressor Russia in the Ukraine war. Again, Germany can learn a lot here.

Ukraine war: Trump’s twisted view of the world

In which twisted world Donald Trump lives, he has now again vividly expressed the remark that Russia has “behaved well in relation to Ukraine”. To invade a neighboring country, to shoot it from the air without ceasing and to insist on its de facto capitulation, that is supposed to be “good”? And the president of the attacked country, which is struggling for his naked survival, wants to keep Trump from further negotiations, while he is quite ready to talk with Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping about Ukraine. Thus speaks and acts in 2026 an American president whose predecessors saw themselves as leaders of the free world. He takes sides with an autocratic superpower, helps it economically and puts pressure on a nation struggling for freedom and connection to the West. The Foreign Minister’s assertions as to how far this pressure goes, whether intelligence data and arms supplies are also withheld, is difficult to assess in view of the reproaches and denials from Kiev and Washington. But one hesitates to believe the assurances of Trump’s foreign minister, they are too much in opposition to the political direction of his boss. This also belongs to the moral decline of world power. The word of an American Secretary of State was worth something. For the shrunken center of German politics, the past few days have once again taught that it is better not to rely on America anymore. There is a danger that it will fail: quite obviously as a political ally and possibly also as an IT service provider or arms supplier. The answer to this is not submission to Russia, as the AfD wants, but more (European) independence.
