Valued at Rp902 million, what exactly is the Victoria’s Secret Fantasy Bra?

One of Victoria’s Secret’s iconic bras, the Fantasy Bra, was showcased once again after a few years’ absence from the catwalk. Instantly, the Fantasy Bra captured everyone’s attention.

So, what exactly is Victoria’s Secret’s Fantasy Bra?

In the latest show held on Sunday (18 October), Kylie Jenner was chosen as the model tasked with showcasing the Fantasy Bra. Jenner walked the runway wearing a mini skirt, transparent high heels and white feathered wings. The Fantasy Bra she wore was the centre of attention.

The Fantasy Bra is actually part of Victoria’s Secret’s ‘Fantasy’ collection. It is no ordinary bra, but an expensive one studded with luxurious jewellery.

Usually, this first piece of bejewelled lingerie is released every year. However, the Fantasy Bra has been absent from the show for the past few years. It was last showcased on the Victoria’s Secret catwalk in 2018.

According to Victoria’s Secret’s official website, the Fantasy Bra was first launched in 1996. At that time, this fantastic piece of lingerie was worn by actress Claudia Schiffer.

Gradually, the Fantasy Bra has evolved into one of the most expensive pieces of lingerie in fashion history.

“The Fantasy Bra was one of the most requested items from last year’s show. So, we thought, what if we [Victoria’s Secret] did it in a fun way,” said Victoria’s Secret Creative Director Adam Selman, as quoted by Vogue.

Selman regards the Fantasy Bra as a fusion of jewellery and art. He even described the Fantasy Bra as worthy of a museum collection.

The Fantasy Bra showcased this time was crafted using 4,410 natural diamonds. These diamonds encircle a 75.54-carat Fancy Vivid yellow diamond.

It took 15 craftspeople and over 1,000 hours to create it. And it’s no small feat: the total cost amounted to US$50 million, or around Rp902.2 billion.

The bra was designed by Selman in collaboration with jewellery designer Jacob Arabo. Selman considered Arabo to be the ideal person to collaborate with on designing this fantastic bra.

“I love his artistry, craftsmanship and boldness. Jacob understands that the Fantasy Bra must be spectacular,” said Selman.

The Fantasy Bra itself was inspired by Jacob & Co.’s Rare Touch jewellery collection. This collection explores how precious metals can be shaped to move with the body, much like fabric.

Diamonds are set throughout the articulated structure, which moves with the body rather than simply resting on it.

“For me, it has to be about diamonds, light and movement. We combine extraordinary diamonds in various shapes and sizes, then design them to capture the light with every step,” said Arabo.
