Leverkusen's Maza brings down Freiburg's Matanović

SC Freiburg lost the lead in the Bundesliga. The Breisgauers were defeated by Bayer Leverkusen 1:2 (1:1). For Freiburg, new national player Derry Scherhant (14th minute) scored 1-0, Ibrahim Maza (19th) and Patrik Schick (76th) led Leverkusen to the fifth compulsory game victory in series.

This puts the Freiburgers back in third place after FC Bayern’s 6-1 victory against RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund’s draw at Union Berlin. On the next matchday there will be a direct duel against the record champion from Munich. Leverkusen remains on place four, on points with the Freiburgers.

Both teams had European Cup games during the week and therefore rotated strongly. Shortly after the kick-off, the guest fans from Freiburg provided an approximately five-minute break: They repeatedly threw tennis balls on the court. Freiburg coach Julian Schuster ran several times gesticulating in front of the Freiburg corner to get the fans to stop. The protest was directed against strict conditions for guest fans in the BayArena. The home fans also showed solidarity with the action.

Federal coach Jürgen Klopp acknowledged the scenes on the grandstand with a smile. The Freiburg leadership goal should have pleased him, as two of his national players were involved. Philipp Treu combined over the right side in the direction of the penalty area and then laid across Scherhant, who pushed the ball through the legs of Bayer goalkeeper Mark Flekken into the net.

Leverkusen was not shocked by the goal. It took the factory only five minutes to fight back with a worth seeing combination of Moussa Diaby and Schick. A hook shelf from Schick used Maza for compensation. It remained the only two goal shots in a balanced first half.

In the second round, Leverkusen was more concerned about offensive actions. First failed Facundo Medina with a shot just past the goal (50.). Then Schick fired a shot at the level of the penalty point over the goal (59.).

Later, Send made it better: On a narrow space, Maza prevailed against two opponents on the opposing corner flag. The German-Algerian found in the penalty area Schick, who met for his sixth goal of the season. It was also the sixth goal in the sixth consecutive Bundesliga match – no Leverkusener in club history has succeeded before.

Freiburg pushed for the compensation, in the last minute of the aftermath Lucas Höler gave a top chance to 2:2. He headed past the gate from a short distance (90+3.).
