The referendum results in Alberta Province, Canada show that the region society wants to remain part of Canada.
CBS News reports Alberta citizens have chosen to remain with the North American state on a referendum held on Monday (19 / 10).
This referendum is unbinding and it contains questions about whether citizens want to remain part of Canada or start a legal process to carry out a binding vote about independence.
The survey results and analysts have stated that separation is impossible because only a third of the citizens want it.
Alberta was known as one of the oil-rich areas. However, some citizens feel the federal government in Ottawa is taking too much income from Alberta's natural resources without giving it a fair reward.
Founder of Pathway's advocacy to Independence organization, Cory Morgan, became one of the figures that for over 25 years fought for Alberta's independence. He said he would continue to fight for that idea even though citizens refused to segregation in referendum.
Alberta University's political science professor Jared Wesley said that some of the advocates actually don't want freedom. They used the vote to convey discontent to Ottawa.
The data Viewpoint Alberta collected, a research initiative based at Alberta University, shows two-thirds of the voters who support referendum do so to send a message to Ottawa.
Morgan referred to the group as "reluctant separatists," as citizens who thought "desperate" and wanted the federal government to care more about Alberta's interests.
