GERMANY: A glitch in tobacco tax! Law accidentally enters into force at midnight

A breakdown in the tobacco tax causes confusion: The increase decided by the Bundestag will apparently come into force from tomorrow due to an error in the publication – and not as planned on January 1. The Federal Ministry of Finance speaks of a technical error and has initiated a correction. The General Customs Directorate has been instructed not to apply the new tax rates for the time being. For smokers, this means all-clear: despite the formal entry into force, cigarettes should not become more expensive from tomorrow.

No one spoke of an economic crisis 65 years ago. On the contrary: Germany was booming, desperately looking for workers. The German Government therefore concluded a recruitment agreement with Turkey. From the start in 1961 to the stop in 1973, about 870,000 Turkish workers came to Germany. They mainly took on jobs in mining, road construction and industry. 500,000 returned to their homes after the end. Anyone who built a life here had to overcome hurdles.
