The focus is now on classical modernism: At Messe Munich Highlights in the Munich Residence, after the departure of important dealers for ancient art, Expressionism sets the most important accents.

Art fair "Munich Highlights": Renovation is required in the residence

An exploration of the Munich Highlights shows: The pretty boutique fair is in the Munich residence with its 17. Once again the construction of a "museum on time" succeeded. Which other fair in Germany allows you to experience how well antiques and old masters harmonize with newer art? The 50 exhibitors offer plenty of all this – but then you stand where Peter Mühlbauer used to have his magnificent stand, unexpectedly before the refreshment bar. Walking and coming at the probably most expensive trade fair in the country The dealer based in the Pockinger Schloss Schönburg is not the only one who leaves gaps in the top area of old art. Georg Laue also cancelled: The Munich art chamber specialists moved instead to the Frieze Masters in London. In addition, the large porcelain shops are missing. Because Röbbig was already due to insolvency last year, one misses this time all the more the Meissen specialists of Langeloh from Weinheim. They recently preferred to participate in the Paris Parcour de la Céramique. They are dealers ennobled by the TEFAF who drop out in Munich, participants of the Maastricht European Art Fair, the most prestigious event of its kind. But also for fairs: Everything is in the river. In order to remain in the picture, Old Art threatens to be flooded by later art production. Some traders, such as Laue or Langeloh, set off on new shores, others pay more attention to the costs. Thole Rotermund from Hamburg, who specializes in paper works of the modern age and is a member of the management team of the highlights, nevertheless assures that this “probably most expensive trade fair in the country” (the prices are about 1000 euros rent per square meter at the stand stately) can rely on a high percentage of regular exhibitors and returnees. Also, unlike others, they keep the stand prices stable and also the costs alone, without support of city or country. They still exist, the magnificent bunks with fine antiques and selected crafts such as Franke from Bamberg or Helga Matzke from Grünwald, one of the first addresses for European silver. Both also participate in TEFAF. New exhibitors also came on board: Hoffman’s antiques from Stockholm, for example, or August Laube from Zurich. But the focus of the current issue of Highlights is on classical modernism. The fact that “German Expressionism triumphs”, as stated in the press release, underlines the top prize of 3.8 million euros at Samuelis Baumgarte from Bielefeld for Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s painting “Entertainment in the Garden”. Munich Highlights, Residence Munich, until 18 October, admission 25 Euro
