Without transport, the continent stands still. Roads, rails and air corridors are the veins that supply and connect Europe. How can we reconcile this with the great challenges of the future: reducing CO2 emissions, e-cars, the rail transport revolution? Without transport, Europe and its economy are crippled. While CO2 emissions have declined significantly during the corona crisis, this period of restrictions has also highlighted how dependent Europeans are on road, air and shipping. A short-term decarbonisation of air traffic seems impossible. So should we avoid long-distance travel? Or travel the continent by other means? And if so, with which? Cars and even bicycles are assembled from parts transported by ship or plane from all over the world. Once assembled, they travel thousands of kilometres on polluting trucks before arriving at the buyer. The European economy and infrastructure are geared towards global trade. Today they reach their limits. Switzerland shows that rail transport can be an interesting alternative. With the consent of the population, polluting energies were taxed, massive investments were made in rail and piggyback transport and lorry traffic was banned from the roads. But Switzerland remains an isolated case. Most European countries today rely on electric cars. They are cleaner, often cheaper and soon perhaps already autonomous. In addition, they give rise to questioning the use of the car, which is still a status symbol for many people today. Some companies still struggle to rethink their economic model. But given the competition from Asia, the good old gas station could soon be a thing of the past. However, turning away from the internal combustion engine alone will not be enough. Green mobility is and remains one of Europe’s major challenges.
