RI Chase Trading Agreement with the EU, Early 2027?

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - the Indonesian government targeted Indonesian-European Union Comprehensive Economic Association Agreement can begin to act effectively in early 2027. In pursuit of that target, the government continues to intensify diplomacy and encourage acceleration of the signing process and certification of the agreement.

The government hopes that the acceleration of the signing and certification process can make the agreement immediately implemented so that the benefits can be felt by the entrepreneurs on both sides.

"It is important to maintain a positive moment of IEU-CEPA completion through reinforcement of coordination and diplomacy with the UE institutions. The signing acceleration also needs to be followed by preparation for certification and implementation in order to get the benefit of both parties," said Haryo in his statement, Tuesday (20 / 10 / 2026).

Indonesia and the EU have reached a substantial IEU-CEPA settlement in September 2025. Both sides later completed the legal scrubbing process in August 2026 and are now entering the final stage of signing preparations.

In June 2026, the European Commission had submitted an IEU-CEPA proposal to the European Union Council to obtain signing approval and settlement of the agreement.

The Indonesian Republican Embassy for Belgium, Luxembourg and the EU continue to establish intensive communication with various interests in the UE.

Both parties are trying to get IEU-CEPA signing done before the end of 2026.

Beyond the expansion of market access, IEU-CEPA is also potentially encouraging an increase in Indonesian exports. Based on a number of analysis of the impact of the free trade agreement or the free trade aggression (FTA) and CEPA, IEU-CEPA are potentially increasing Indonesian exports to US $10.9 billion.

By comparison, I-CA CEPA is thought to be potentially increasing exports around US $1.6 billion, whereas I-EAEU FTA is potentially adding exports to US $2.2 billion to US $2.89 billion.

That potential suggests that the benefits of the trade agreement don't just come from a decline in fares. Agreement can also open trade expansion rooms, especially for commodities that have adequate production capacity in Indonesia and potential demand in partner countries.

The export Potential Analysis also shows an opportunity to increase exports a number of commodities that still have a gap between the current export value and the potential that can be achieved in the destination market.

For the European Union, the EFTA countries, and the UK, the chances of exporting Indonesia are in palm oil and products of their descent, motor vehicles, coffee, cocoa, rubber and rubber products, iron and steel, processed wood, and fishery.

Meanwhile, the Canadian market offers opportunities for mineral and metal products, chemicals, vehicles, wood and rubber, as well as machine and electronic equipment.

Through I-CA CEPA, Indonesia also has a chance of pushing the export of food and drink, sea, footwear, processed wood products, electronics, automobiles and craft products.

As for the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), export opportunities include chemical products, napati products, vehicles, minerals and metals, wood, paper, rubber and plastic. A number of commodities such as palm coconuts, footwear, shrimp, natural rubber, coffee and atsiri oil also have a chance of getting a better rate through I-EAU FTA.

In addition to the acceleration of IEU-CEPA, the government also discussed the possibility of strengthening the Indonesian economic partnership and the European Union in the strategic sector, including the semiconductor industries, technologies and creative economies.

That cooperation is expected to open up new investment opportunities, improve the national industrial capacity, and strengthen the ecosystem of innovation and technology in Indonesia.

The effort was expected to accelerate the benefit of the agreement and be the foundation for the Indonesian economic partnership - the more rigorous and sustainable European Union.
