The study of the drug-finding Obatuity can lower the fat in the liver

Small studies find liver fat dropping on Wegovy users. However, the results haven't proven it can cure liver disease.

The study of the drug-finding Obatuity can lower the fat in the liver

Wegovy obesity drug shows potential in lowering liver fat. In a research analysis, 23 out of 26 obese participants with excess liver fat at the beginning of research were listed as being reduced to a 5 percent threshold after 72 weeks of using semglutide.

The findings are equal to 88.5 percent or almost nine out of 10 participants in analysed groups. Although promising, this result needs to be carefully interpreted because it comes from small groups and not the primary purpose of research.

Quoted from the Medical Daily, it came from an additional analysis of STEP UP study presented in the annual European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EAST) 2026 in Milan, Italy. Semalutide is an active substance in Wegovy, a drug developed by Novo Nordisk to help weight management. In this analysis, researchers evaluate liver fat changes in adults with obesity without diabetes.

The measurement of 55 participants in the STEP UP subgroup study, of which 26 people are known to have liver fat levels above 5 percent at the beginning of research. The experimenter uses magnetic resonance methods, imagining proton, density fat fraction, which is an imaging technique that predicts fat content in the liver without taking tissue samples.

In the participants who received a ladglutide, the average liver fat dropped from 8.8 percent at the beginning of the study to 3.1 percent after 72 weeks. That number is the combined result of participants using a 7.2 milligrams and 2.4 milligrams. However, the decline in the group was not enough to ensure the importance of the drug to the overall health care.

Medical Daily reports say that analysis is post-hoc and exploration. That is, researchers do auxiliary research of data that have been collected, rather than evaluating results that have since been set up as a primary goal or secondary research. There are a number of limitations that need to be noticed before these findings are interpreted as proof of the benefits Wegovy has to offer to the health of the liver.

First, the number of participants who underwent relatively small liver fat measures. Out of 55 people were checked, only 26 people had excess liver fat at the beginning of research and became the underlying group of finding 23 out of the 26.

With limited amounts of samples, the results don't necessarily reflect people's response to obesity in general, especially those who have health or different characteristics.

Second, 23 of the 26 participants are not detailed based on each dose of semglutide. The available report also does not present liver-fat measurements to placebo groups as an appeal.

Therefore, the lack of visible liver fat can't be considered entirely due to drugs. It takes further reference data and research to assess the relationship more easily.

The other thing to understand is the difference between lower liver fat and repairing liver disease. Deceased liver fat levels don't mean inflammation has disappeared or liver tissue damage has recovered. These are two different aspects that need to be judged to know the overall state of heart health.

One of the diseases related to the accumulation of liver fat is metabolic dysfunctionThis condition is marked by the accumulation of fat, inflammation and liver cells. In some patients, it can grow into scar tissue or cirrhosis.

Do you not understand?

The assessment of a treatment for liver disease requires more evidence, including research that specifically measures the changes of inflammation, tissue damage, and long-term disease development.

STEP UP's research added information on possible benefits of semultide to the liver fat in adults with obesity. However, it still requires further research to know whether those changes are related to repair long-term state and health benefits.

Heart health is also one aspect that needs to be noticed in metabolic health management, especially in people with obesity or type 2 diabetes. Inspection and handling should be adjusted to the condition of each patient by consulting with medical personnel.

These research results are no reason to start using Wegovy or change the drug doses independently. The use of obesity drugs needs to consider health conditions, indications, benefits, and risk side effects on each patient.

And We made some of you as a trial for others. Further research is still required to ensure the impact on liver functions, disease development, and patient health as a whole.
