Erik ten Hag revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo failed his teammates during his second period at Manchester United.
In an interview with The Athletic, Ten Hag said that Ronaldo missed a team practice session and didn't quite run the field.
"He let down the team, and he let me down, because we had made plans with him. I flew to Portugal to talk to him about what I wanted to achieve before I joined United," Said Ten Hag.
"Obviously, he's one of the best in football history. I respect him very much. But, at the time, as a manager, I had to make rational decisions and keep the players that I admired," he said continued.
Ten Hag also highlighted Ronaldo's work ethic, not only during games but also during training sessions. The Dutch coach said Ronaldo ran less and even asked his colleagues to save their strength.
"It's wrong to assume that I sue him for pressing until he's exhausted. The thing is, he can't do it. He doesn't run, either when the team has the ball or when he doesn't. The reason he didn't prepare himself well," said Ten Hag.
"Every top team must embrace its star player, but even the star player must work for the team. He just told his teammates: 'Save your strength at practice'. I'll be able to understand it when you're in a fit condition, in a certain condition, players can save energy. However, before that, one must train themselves to reach the proper fitness level."
Ten Hag and Ronaldo were involved in a conflict in MU, that conflict that led to CR7 was eventually released and fled to Saudi Arabia's club, Al Nassar on 31 Drum2022.
