Ukraine war: U.S. again reportedly failed to provide data on Russian missile attacks

Destruction in Kyiv after a Russian missile attack

On Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the U.S. was again providing Ukraine with key intelligence to counter Russian missile attacks. But the alleged relief could now be over again. Zelensky complains after new Russian attacks that he was not warned by his country’s partners. The United States disagrees.

Russia has once again attacked energy facilities and infrastructure in several regions across the country, Zelensky writes on Telegram: “Once again, a Russian ballistic attack in several waves overnight and again without warning from partners.”

Ukraine relies on U.S. information to locate the fast-flying ballistic missiles that Russia fires at its cities in waves. President Trump said last week that Washington continues to share intelligence. This happened even though Ukrainian officials said some Russian attacks were made without warning. The interruption lasted several days.

The events fueled fears in Ukraine that the US could reduce support on the battlefield in order to force Ukraine to make concessions. President Donald Trump lifted sanctions on Russian diesel a few days ago and publicly criticized Zelensky.

Meanwhile, concerns about the possible lack of US aid are flareing up again. At least 550,000 families are without electricity, writes the Ukrainian President Zelensky on Telegram. Moscow has deployed 16 ballistic missiles in an attack on the capital Kyiv and its surroundings. Other regions were attacked with more than 200 drones. Zelensky spoke of victims. Authorities said at least one 21-year-old was killed in Kyiv. Eight other people were injured.

In a rocket attack in the southeastern Ukrainian industrial city of Kryvy Rih, at least two people were killed, according to the authorities. Seven more were injured, the military governor of the Dnipro area, Oleksandr Hanscha, told Telegram. The attack was therefore aimed at an unspecified industrial company. President Volodymyr Zelensky’s hometown is just 70 kilometres from the Russian-Ukrainian frontline.

Air Force spokesman Yury Ihnat said on television that there was no timely warning of the first wave of ballistic missiles during the night. Therefore, before the second wave of attacks, there was information from the allies. This has been the case on several occasions. Regarding the possible cause, Ihnat did not provide any information.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, meanwhile, rejected Zelensky’s accusations of withheld information. “There was no interruption,” Rubio told reporters in Uzbekistan. He was irritated by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Zelensky spoke of refusal of reality if supplies of missiles for the air defense of Ukraine were blocked, while Russia get relief or postponement of sanctions. Relations between Kyiv and Washington are currently tense. Most recently, the US temporarily lifted sanctions against Russian diesel. US President Donald Trump also suspended planned new sanctions against Russia shortly before their entry into force.

The Defense Ministry in Moscow confirmed in the morning attacks on Kyiv and the surrounding area. Data centers and targets of the arms industry were attacked, it is said. In addition, a freighter in the Black Sea was hit. The information cannot be independently verified.

Ukraine, with Western help, has been defending itself against the large-scale Russian invasion for more than four and a half years.

Volodymyr Zelensky asks at the EU summit for an additional 70 billion euros for defense against Russia. But Europeans do not have much more to offer than dutiful expressions of solidarity. Read more about this here.

New EU strategy: Why the Arctic is becoming a security risk

For a long time, the Arctic was regarded as a region with few tensions. However, the geopolitical situation has changed fundamentally, and climate change is also affecting the far north. A new EU strategy is intended to take this into account. By A. Bartram.
