2035 should actually be the end of combustion engines for new cars in the EU. In the meantime, however, it looks as if the complete combustion engine off could tip. The negotiators of the political groups in the European Parliament have already agreed. By Jean-Marie Magro The out of the so-called combustion engine out seems to be getting closer. In the European Parliament in Strasbourg, negotiators of the conservative European People's Party, the social democratic S&D and the liberal Renew agreed on a compromise. This emerges from a paper that is available to the ARD studio Brussels. Accordingly, from 2035 new cars will emit 95 percent less CO2 than compared to the starting year 2021. According to the paper, the value may fall to up to 87.5 percent if steel produced in a climate-friendly car was used. This would allow the sale of new combustion engines and hybrid cars. The previous regulation stipulated that in Europe from 2035 no new cars will be registered that blow CO2 into the air. Groups and Parliament still have to agree The paper also provides for further easing the emission targets for the transitional periods. The agreement is not yet final. The three groups have yet to agree to the compromise forged by the negotiators. On Thursday, both the Transport Committee and the Industry Committee in the European Parliament are to vote their opinion on the off from the combustion engine off. At the beginning of November, the Environment Committee will follow. And only in December would Parliament as a whole adopt its position.
