Amazon plans to invest 16 billion euros in Germany

Amazon headquarters in Munich: Germany as a growth market

The trading platform Amazon wants to invest around 16 billion euros in Germany next year. Among other things, the money will go to the expansion of data centers for the cloud provider AWS and the modernization of logistics sites, as the company announced. In logistics alone, around 3000 additional jobs are currently being set up, it said. In addition, dozens of own productions in Germany for the streaming service Amazon Prime are planned.

Around 4.8 billion euros and thus a large part of the investment sum Amazon wants to invest in the expansion of the cloud and AI infrastructure. The money flows into the so-called AWS Region Europe around Frankfurt am Main. Further details on the investments Amazon did not initially mention. In addition to the online marketplace and logistics, the cloud provider AWS is another central business area of the US group. In Germany, according to the Group, around 3000 employees work for the division.

The logistics centers are about investments in modern technologies such as robotics, the company said. Already ongoing modernizations of the sites in Bad Hersfeld in Hesse and Dortmund and Herne in North Rhine-Westphalia are to be completed next year. In Könnern in Saxony-Anhalt, a new center is currently being built.

Another area of investment, according to Amazon, is the satellite Internet service Amazon Leo. It is the central competition project for Starlink, the satellite internet of right-wing US entrepreneur Elon Musk.
