Canadian Prime Minister Prepares Scenarios to Counter the Threat of a US Invasion

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has drawn up contingency plans in the event that the United States were ever to launch an invasion of the country.

Carney stated that he was merely engaging in risk management. As Canada’s leader, he feels it is his responsibility to consider extreme risks.

“It is simply risk management. It is not a baseline scenario, but it would be irresponsible not to consider it,” Carney said in an interview with the New York Times in early October, as quoted by Politico.

He declined to discuss in further detail the preparations for a possible US military action. The Canadian Prime Minister’s Office did not immediately comment.

On that occasion, Carney instead touched upon the high import tariffs imposed by the US on Canada.

The Canadian Prime Minister remains optimistic that the two countries can reach an agreement on trade cooperation. Carney also said he had tried to speak with Trump.

“From my perspective, we have a good relationship in the sense that we can contact each other by telephone to discuss various issues,” he said.

“He is straightforward. I am also straightforward regarding our respective positions. That approach is far more efficient, and you know that the relationship exists and will continue to exist,” added Carney.

Carney’s comments came as US President Donald Trump threatened to annex Canada.

“Canada must become our 51st Beloved State,” Trump wrote on Truth Social in February last year.

He then remarked, “Taxes are much lower, and military protection is much better for the Canadian people – AND NO TARIFFS!”

Relations between the two countries became increasingly strained when Trump imposed high import tariffs on Canada. The Republican politician frequently uses high tariffs to punish any country that does not comply with his wishes.
