You brushed your teeth before you went to sleep, why does your mouth still smell when you wake up?

Already brush your teeth before bedtime, but your breath still reeks when you wake up? This condition might make some people wonder, especially if dental and oral hygiene are being guarded every day.

The smell of mouth in the morning doesn't always have to do with brushing teeth.

There's a natural process in the mouth during sleep that can affect the smell of breath waking up. Here's actually what happened inside the mouth during our sleep.

While sleeping, the production of saliva goes down naturally. Clinical Journal of Medicine, low flow of saliva pertaining to oral odor in the morning. The saliva isn't just a liquid that helps soften food and ease the process of swallowing.

It also acts in maintaining the hygiene of the oral cavity by helping clean out the remaining food and cells that slip off the surface of the mouth.

Therefore when the production of saliva is reduced, the mouth's ability to cleanse itself is not as optimal as it is awake.

It also allows bacteria in the mouth to break down proteins, including the rest of the cell and other components in the oral cavity. The process produces a compound that causes a bad smell.

One of them is hydrogen sulfide, a volatile sulfur compound that has the scent of rotten eggs. Besides, compounds like methanetiol can also contribute to the smell of breath.

So, waking up doesn't just matter what's left of dinner. The bacteria activity that lasts during sleep, plus the lack of the effect of saliva cleaning, plays a role in the appearance of the smell.

It's important to brush your teeth before sleeping because it helps to remove plaque and leftovers. However, that habit does not stop the entire bacteria activity in the mouth during one's sleep.

The surface of the tongue, especially the back of it, can also be where the layer contains bacteria, leftovers, and cells that are naturally released.

If this part isn't cleaned, that layer can contribute to the smell of breath.

To quote the Journal of Breath Research, there are 35 compounds that are dropping by the time they brush their teeth. Most of these compounds do have something to do with bacterial activity in the oral cavity.

A compound that can contribute to the smell of morning breath covering hydrogen sulfide, methanetiol, and dimethyl sulfide.

So brushing the teeth can help reduce the compound, but it doesn't always remove the entire source of smell, especially when bacterial activity continues during sleep.

There are some habits that can be done to keep your mouth clean and help alleviate the smell of breath in the morning.

If the mouth odor stays all day even though the oral hygiene has been guarded, you should check the dental condition and gum to the dentist.

A problem like gums, caries, or dry mouths related to drug use can also cause bad breath and need to be dealt with accordingly.

The smell of waking up is a common phenomenon. The decline of saliva production during sleep reduces the natural cleaning of the oral cavity, while bacteria keep producing odourful compounds.
